Cada año dedico buena parte de mi tiempo al entrenamiento administrativo para la Circle K Corporation, una cadena nacional de tiendas de abarrotes. Entre los temas que tratamos en nuestros seminarios está el de cómo conservar a los empleados de calidad —un verdadero reto para los administradores, si consideramos la escala de salarios en la industria de los servicios. En el transcurso de estas discusiones, pregunto a los participantes, '¿Qué lo ha llevado a usted a permanecer en este cargo el tiempo suficiente como para llegar a ser administrador?'. Un día tuve ocasión de comprender un poco su manera de pensar. Sucedió cuando me encontraba de visita en el almacén de música de mi esposo. Él estaba atendiendo a un cliente y no disponía de mucho personal. Hice entonces lo que cualquier buena esposa habría hecho: traté de atender a los clientes.
'Busco una partitura', dijo un hombre gruñón que llevaba una gorra sucia fuertemente apretada sobre sus escasos cabellos grises. 'El nombre de la canción es . . .', y alisó un ajado papel mimeografiado que había sacado del bolsillo. '‘Escalera al cielo.' ¿La tiene?'
Me dirigí al lugar donde estaban almacenadas las partituras y comencé a buscar el nombre. En un día de suerte, las partituras se encuentran en orden alfabético. Aquel día no lo estaban. Busqué durante varios minutos, consciente de la creciente impaciencia del hombre.
'No, lo siento, pero parece que no la tenemos.' Su espalda se arqueó y sus ojos azul pálido se estrecharon. Casi imperceptiblemente, su esposa le tocó la manga como para detenerlo. Retorció sus delgados labios, enojado.
'¡Pues qué maravilla! ¿Y se creen un almacén de música? ¿Qué clase de almacén no tiene este tipo de música? ¡Todos los chicos conocen esa canción!', murmuró.
'Sí, pero no tenemos todas las partituras que jamás . . .' 'Claro, ¡es fácil para usted! ¡Es fácil dar disculpas!' Ahora su esposa se aferraba a su manga, susurrando, tratando de calmarlo, como le habla un chalán a un caballo desbocado.
Se inclinó hacia mí, señalándome con su nudoso dedo. 'Supongo que usted no entendería, ¿verdad? ¡A usted no le importa que mi hijo haya muerto! Que haya incrustado su auto en aquel árbol viejo. Que toquemos su canción predilecta en su funeral. ¡Y está muerto! ¡Ya no está! ¡Dieciocho años y ya no está!' Pude enfocar entonces el papel que agitaba ante mi vista. Era el programa para el servicio funerario.
'Supongo que no entendería', murmuró. Inclinó la cabeza. Su esposa lo rodeó con los brazos y permaneció silenciosa a su lado. 'No puedo entender su pérdida', dije en voz baja, 'pero enterramos a mi sobrino de cuatro años el mes pasado, y sé cómo duele algo así'. Levantó la vista. El enojo había desaparecido de su rostro y suspiró. 'Es una pena, ¿verdad? Una pena terrible.' Permanecimos en silencio durante largo rato. Luego buscó en el bolsillo de atrás y sacó una billetera ajada. '¿Quiere ver una foto de nuestro hijo?'
